“Lost in Yonkers”, Directed by the Lead Singer of the Kismet Rock Stars
April 28th, 2008The Resort Players of Mount Washington Valley are currently in rehearsal for Neil Simon’s 1992 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play Lost in Yonkers. Directed by Mary Bastoni-Rebmann, Lost in Yonkers is a touching, bittersweet, and often comedic story of an eccentric New York family in crisis in the summer of 1942. On the run from a loan shark, a frightened and weak-willed father (Ken Martin) leaves his two teenage boys, Jay (Jake Dunham) and Arty (David Fulton), with their domineering grandmother (Stacy Sand), who runs a candy store in Yonkers. The effect of the old woman’s tyranny over two generations of offspring becomes evident as she coldheartedly attempts to control not only their lives, but also that of her mentally challenged middle-aged daughter, Bella (Molly Campbell), who desperately yearns for love and independence. The boys are forced to live by their stern grandmother’s rules until their gangster uncle, Louie (Dennis O’Neil), comes to town one night and goes into hiding in the family home. Uncle Louie ends up helping both boys, Bella, and his sister Gertrude (Karen O’Neil) understand their aging grandmother and realize the importance of acceptance and love, despite the hardships of life in Yonkers.
The Resort Players have presented productions of A Christmas Carol, Rumors, Dancing at Lughnasa, The Christmas Foundling, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, The Odd Couple, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Murder on the Re-run, and most recently David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross which received nine top ten nominations in the New Hampshire Theater awards. Opening on May 1 and running through May 11, Lost in Yonkers has been nominated for the New Hampshire Theater Awards. Lost in Yonkers is a production for teenagers and adults.
